Beautiful embossed metal art is such an elegant and unique medium! "Repousse" metalwork has been done for centuries – it's an art of enduring beauty.
For this work we use a soft tooling metal which makes it easy to form patterns and images. The process is fun for all skill levels, and the finished work of art is a "Wow, you did that?!"
"Thank you so much for sharing this class with me. It has been so long since I attempted anything in the art realm.
Thank you for opening the door softly so I could step in without fear (or at least not too much)!
Tooling metal comes in many colors of aluminum, where the color is added to the top layer. I prefer to use either real copper, or uncolored aluminum which can be colored after the metal has been tooled.
The process itself isn't difficult, it's fun and easy to get amazing results!
The time it takes to do a piece depends on the size of your work and the amount of detail that you want to add to it.
All of the materials are inexpensive and easy to buy at a craft store, art supply store, or online, and I provide buying suggestions and links to materials so that you'll know exactly what you need.
This is perfect for you if you're just starting out, but even a seasoned artist will enjoy this process.
I've been an artist since I was a small child, using the chalk from a broken wall to draw on the slate sidewalk in front of my home...
and I've been teaching since I was a teenager, tasked with doing arts and crafts for summer kids camp.
I've had a long career filled with lots of artsy stuff, from illustrating an international children's magazine to paintings hanging in public and private spaces across the US.
These days I'm happy to guide others into being their already creative selves. I work to bring art curriculum to active senior centers, teach art in my community, and run art programs for kids. Bringing some instruction online helps me to reach YOU - it's my prayer that you can find a means of expressing yourself that makes your heart sing!
When my students ask me what my favorite medium is, I say "The one I'm working with in that moment" because I enjoy so many of them. I love to draw, paint, and create, and I love to share what I know, too. There are many ways to make art...let's have some fun with them!
